Social and ethical issues for new methods of broadcasting
- Control: The control over the content to be broadcasted is a major issue; questions like what should be controlled? Who should control and should it be control? Are a few that arise. Through the Internet, we have freedom of speech, we can practically write what we want to write and say what we want to say. However, not every one uses such benefit well. Some has used it to post unnecessary pictures; like porn, or has posted up insults, criticism- many have misused it. Therefore, this then triggers officials – government or non-government companies (profit or non-profit) to control over the content that is posted by the users. They will be in charge of any information being posted up and will be responsible if there is any fault or if there is anything wrong.. So, to prevent themselves from being sued, they have to have some rules and regulations, terms and conditions that users have to adhere to. Some websites have taken measures help block, delete, disable information that infringes copyright. Say, YouTube for instance. YouTube can monitor any videos being posted and will disable the video if it is not genuinely created by the user. However, if such tight control is applied to every content users post up, then it would reduce the freedom of speech. Users do not want this. The content will be less accurate, less reliable as sensitive information may not be posted up. Some users have been sued because of blogging. Article from Borneo Bulletin on 23 February 2007, talks about a Malaysian blogger whom got sued because his articles were claimed to be anti-government. But whatever it is, blogging serves as a place for users to express themselves and share with the viewers their perception, feelings and daily life routine….bascially, users can post up anything. Borneo Bulletin on 6th January 2007, written by Azuan Ahmad shows us how a school teacher is able to express his interest in photography by setting up a photoblog, posting all sorts of photos he has taken. Besides these pros and cons, what else can you think of? Do you think information should be controlled?

- Humanitarian problem: Since news, articles, magazine can all be viewed through the Internet, how do you think this will affect us, and the way we view things? We have wider access to these information, therefore broaden our views and perception of certain things. Government tend to be strict on the availability of access to certain webpages, especially those of which that influences readers’ political views and perception. Besides that, it may change our lifestyle, from drinking a coffee and reading a newspaper
