Telelearning is the process of e-learning where students learn a particular aspect long distance. Tele-learning includes: - Virtual Learning Environment - Usage of technology in hospitals, prisons and retirement homes
VLE: Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) is a teaching and learning tool to that is designed to help enhance students learn and teachers to teach by having the Internet in the process. It creates an environment for the teachers and students to interact with one another regardless the distance.
VLE can provide flexibility in learning as it allows students to learn according to their pace. In addition, students and teachers are not restricted to be punctual to attend a class and it saves time to travel from home to classrooms. However, it reduces face-to-face interaction, limiting a person from socialising. Another problem is the cost in maintaining a successful VLE since it would be expensive. Nevertheless, VLE has been used in many areas. According to Rick Martinez, the director of Independent school, Texas, Macromedia has been able to create an effective VLE that also be able to allow parents to use and be able to know how their child/children have been progressing.
Hardware and Software requirement
Hardware: A computer is needed with digital camera, speakers and microphone equipped so that the process of virtual learning would be easier. Wide Area Network is used in this process. It is also vital to have a high connection speed hence broadband connection is most recommended. Another important note is to have a high RAM space so that the any images or videos can be loaded in a faster rate. Software: VLE software is most likely to be installed as well as any other software to enable the hardware to work. For example, a Olympus camera would need an Olympus camera software for the hardware to work properly. To ensure a safe passage of documents through the Internet and to avoid any unnecessary package from entering, anti-malware software is recommended to be installed.
Usage of technology in homes, prisons and retirement homes Hospitals: Patients (teachers or students) can work without going to classrooms, as VLE would provide lessons via the Internet. In addition, there wouldn’t be any rush in finishing work at a particular time as work can be accessed anytime of the day. As for training young doctors or nurses in hospitals, VLE would be a great way to learn. They would not need to attend any classes outside the hospitals, making them be able to learn and practice at the same time and at the same place.
Prisons: Police can use the VLE to improve their theoretical skills in their jobs and be able to apply it in the place that they work. Criminals that are about to leave the prisons (after fulfilling prison sentence), can use VLE to learn new subjects and improve them so that when they are out from the prison, they would have a clue of what they want to do and what they can pursue in.
Retirement homes: People who are retired and wish to learn new subjects (like how to be a good gardener) can use the VLE, without the need to travel from one place to the other. Most VLE provides step-by-step processes and lessons for users and users can always refer back to any unfinished work or if they have forgotten what has been studied. Users have the chance to learn according to their pace. So if a person has not quite get the concept of sowing then he or she can always refer back at anytime. In addition, most VLE are interactive so if any users need help, they can always find guidance among those that use the programme.
