Information on the Internet – What issues does it raise?


With the developments of the Internet and the freely available information on the Internet – everyone is a publisher.

With the advent of the Web 2 – developing Wikis and blogging, being able to publish is that much easier, you do not need to know the latest html or web authoring software to publish on the Internet.

Wikis:

  1. What is meant by the term WIKIS? Read the article It’s a WikiWiki World out there! – ‘Wiki Essentials for Educators’ by Gareth Honeyford
  2. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia which has been developed by the world wide community. You have all used references from here, but how reliable is it? Research to see if Wikipedia has been in the news lately and look at the articles on file.
  3. Discuss and evaluate whether or not Wikipedia is a reliable source of information and give guidelines to students on the appropriate use of this website.

Blogging:

Blogging is taking over the internet; it is being used by business to obtain different opinions from users and developers as well as being a vent for people to air their opinions.

  1. What is meant by the term Blogging?
  2. Are you a blogger? If so share with the class your blog. If not try out www.blogger.com
  3. Research ways that blogging has been used by private individuals, in education, by businesses and by scientists.
  4. Discuss the impact blogging has had on publishing?
  5. Discuss and evaluate the social and ethical issues raised by blogging.

Information Literacy:


How can we guarantee that the information on the Internet is reliable?
How can we tell whether a website is fake or not?
The answer relies in Information Literacy.

2. Create a poster to include tips for students on Information Literacy
